Turkish exporters of rebar start to reduce prices - 06 Aug 11

Turkish exporters of longs are pursuing different policies. In general, suppliers of rebar keep offers at the last-week level, though some of them have raised export quotations amid successful sales in the home market. At the same time, many export-oriented sellers have made reductions. However, domestic demand has already started to weaken, which may force suppliers to cut both domestic and export prices during Ramadan. Nevertheless, prices are unlikely to decrease substantially because construction industry within the country and abroad will start to gradually recover from September.
Turkish exporters are offering rebar to be made in late August within a wide range of $720-750/t FOB, most of them quoting the products at $730-740/t FOB, though. Suppliers are trying to sell at higher prices because domestic ones are at $750-780/t EXW, excl. 18% VAT. Besides, Iraqi customers are booking small lots of Turkish rebar at $780-785/t EXW with shorter delivery period in view of a large number of construction projects in the country.
African buyers from Tanzania and Kenya have booked the material at high prices (on average at $735/t FOB), though in small lots. At the same time, suppliers have offered rebar to the UAE, the major outlet for Turkey, at $720-725/t FOB, on actual weight basis ($735-740/t C&F on theoretical weight basis), while bookings of large batches have been priced $5/t lower. Some Middle Eastern buyers, in particular Syrian ones, have refrained from purchases before Ramadan, while others (e.g. from Saudi Arabia) prefer to buy the material from neighbouring countries. Although Lebanese customers already replenished their inventories earlier, they reportedly intend to start signing new contracts in a week or two.
Prices for August rolling of wire rod have stayed unchanged – $750-760/t FOB. Lebanese traders reportedly show interest in purchases, trying to knock prices down to $735-740/t FOB.
Despite extremely low demand for billet in foreign markets, Turkish suppliers have raised the lower end of prices for August casting of the material by $5/t over the week. Turkish are not very much interested in square billet from the CIS, which is quoted at $695-700/t C&F (up $5/t over the same period), given the fact that some suppliers offer Turkish rebar to foreign markets by $25/t lower.
