According to a report released on November 26 by China's National Development and Reform Commission, in 2008 China approved the construction of 14 nuclear power generating units with capacity of above one million kW, while 24 units were under construction, amounting to a total installed capacity of 25.4 million kW. Thus, China has become the country with the biggest nuclear power capacity under construction in the world. Last year, China had 11 nuclear power reactors in operation, totaling 9.1 million kW.

According to the report, China attaches great importance to the development of renewable energy sources, new energy sources, and other non-carbon and low-carbon energy sources such as natural gas.
